Obama Takes Control Of Texas School Content

February 16, 2012 9:57 pm 0 comments

With one line, Texas handed the decision of what Texas kids are taught over to Barack Obama.

SB6, the school finance bill, was passed and signed at the end of the last special session.  Among the important changes to the financial options available to school districts were two fundamental new developments.  One changes the term “textbooks” to “instructional materials” throughout the Texas Education Code.  This change in part recognizes the significant role that technology plays in all aspects of our lives.

The second change effectively removed the State Board of Education’s oversight of what our kids learn.

Our new law now allows state funds through the instructional materials allotment (IMA) to be spent on Instructional materials from the SBOE list, the Commissioner’s list, and not on the SBOE list.

Did you know that the SBOE reviews textbooks but that non-textbook “instructional materials” are outside of their oversight?  And even if a publisher wants to go through the rigorous review of the SBOE, they now have no reason to do it, because Texas does not now require these materials to undergo review by the SBOE?

What does Texas require regarding oversight of what our kids learn?  School districts now have the ability to “self-certify” that whatever materials they like meet the standards of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), which are the state standards for what students should know and be able to do.

Now, a group of liberal teachers, supported by a liberal administrator, and a school board who does not take their oversight role seriously can adopt any materials for which they can track to the TEKS standards.  This includes materials from Planned Parenthood, CAIR, or any other group with an agenda that may not reflect parents’ values.

How did this happen?  Isn’t selecting the content in our classrooms just as important as getting them funded?

Tonight, Montgomery County Eagle Forum will host a candidate forum for HD-3 and HD-15 (The Woodlands).  Public Education Chairman Rob Eissler is running for re-election; his opponent is small-government Conservative Steve Toth.  If these questions interest you, please attend this forum.

Is Louis Guthrie Even Eligible to Run for Public Office?

As Republicans, we need to be certain that the candidates we select in the Primary have the best chance possible to win in the November election.

What would you think of a candidate, after having won the Primary race, were it discovered that, for one reason or other, the candidate should became disqualified to run in November? Republicans would have no candidate in the November race, and would automatically concede the race, by default, without a fight, to a Democrat.

Incredible, you say? Couldn’t happen here, in Harris County?

Well think again. I became concerned about a candidate in the Harris County Sheriff’s race, Louis Guthrie, currently employed in some capacity as a deputy in the Liberty County Sheriff’s office, when I discovered some federal grants given to the Liberty County Sheriff’s office.

Bill Kneer’s Political Endorsements In The 2012 Republican Primary

When I first got involved in Republican politics I did so not to push Republicans, but to push the Republican Party platform. I am a Republican not because I believe in people within our Party by their name but because I believe in the values that so many have fought for and worked for and laid out so nicely within our party’s platform.

In the past we have had far too many people get elected because they have an “R” beside their name. Far too often, once elected they have governed like liberal Democrats, they spent waaaay too much, they regulated waaaay too much, and some even went so far as to cheat and steal from all of us.

In the past we have had Republican judicial candidates that we fight for and get on the bench and once they are there, they legislated from the bench. This is wrong and it destroys our party so when I pick a candidate I do more than listen to what they say because words don’t matter as much as deeds and what is in their hearts

Mike Anderson Campaign Misuses TV Coverage To Fool Voters

The truth is Ted Oberg, of Channel 13, has made a political witch hunt against Pat Lycos. He has continually used the power of ABC 13 to slant the coverage to hurt our local District Attorney.

In a recent story on ABC 13 headline “it may look like the news, but it’s a political ad”

HOUSTON (KTRK) — It’s political campaign season and TV ads are everywhere, including ones featuring ABC13′s news coverage. It was a surprise to us on when we saw it for the first time. And may have been confusing to some of you, too. Turns out candidates don’t need permission to stretch the truth.

This is all legal. It’s evolving, but courts have said TV coverage is fair game for fair use, which is why politicians looking for a leg up sometimes use the news to make their point.

Harris County Judge Ed Emmett Endorses Harris County District Attorney Pat Lykos

I received an e-mail from the Pat Lycos campaign announcing yet another great endorsement. This time from Republican County Judge Ed Emmett and, like all of us, has seen the fine job that Pat Lycos has done cleaning up the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. There are still a few within Harris County that would like to turn the courthouse back into the frat house that it once was. Back to the days of racist e-mails, pornography, and beer in the courthouse but those days are behind us and they need to stay there.

The attorneys that we employ at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are men and women of honor and integrity, not college students partying on the taxpayer’s dime.

Below you’ll find the e-mail from Pat Lycos announcing her endorsement by Republican County Judge Ed Emmett.

Harris County Attorney race: Robert Talton

Over the last several years I have had the fortune or misfortune to continually disagree with David Jennings – BIG Jolly politics, in just about every race. It seems I was like the good guys and he always wants to support the bad guys. And today in a few races this is still the case but in a few cases this year we do agree.

David Jennings in a recent article posted on BIG Jolly laid out his case for supporting Robert Talton, Republican running for Harris County attorney.

“Mr. Talton has been around Harris County politics a long time and served as a State Rep. for eight terms. Prior to that, he had stints as an Assistant City Attorney, a City Attorney, and a Municipal Judge. All of that in addition to a private legal practice and time patrolling the streets as a Pasadena Police officer. Okay, yeah, the last few years he’s worked with Jared Woodfill’s firm – hey, I didn’t say he was perfect!”
